Dying Guy Breaking 90

In fourth grade my dad brought me golfing for the first time. On the first hole I smacked a chip shot off the flag stick and dropped it into the hole. It was most likely a terrible shot followed by a lucky bounce:I was hooked!  Tiger captivated the sports world around the same time and the hours I spent repeatedly trying to bounce a ball with my 56 degree and volley it into the woods behind my house would have been better spent putting. Good thing I stopped trying to be like Tiger at a young age...

Golf was never my “main” sport but it's what I loved to do the most.  Waking up early on a Sunday, meeting the guys for a 7:04 Tee Time as the fog lifts.  Golf was not only the perfect stress reliever but it was also the thing I invested the most  time into (after the millions of other shit).  I got pretty good, but never great. I loved and was obsessed with the journey of getting better.  My athletic career ended after high school, golf filled the void.  When cancer was threatening to take my arm I remember being most upset that I wouldn’t be able to golf. My wife quickly reminded me that I have two children I’d no longer be able to hug.

After losing function in my arm I fell out of love with the game.  Playing 1 handed is fine and I’m actually decent, but it's not that much fun to play “old man golf” at 39 years old.  Plus, my ghostly skin burns easily now, I tire out by hole 7, and usually sleep most the following day. My kids are super into it and getting better. Like any good dad, there’s no way I’m letting my kids beat me at my game. Not yet, I won't give them the satisfaction and I love the look on their faces when they see my score.  But, they are only getting bigger and stronger while I’m getting the opposite of that.

So, this year I will break 90.  I get to play from  the red tees, but I have to walk and carry my own bag (Klemmers Rules). To be honest, I think the walking part is the part I’m worried about most.(I lied earlier when I said I stopped trying to be like Tiger)
