#81 and Life

A recurring theme on the KMS show has been FX's American Sports Story:Aaron Hernandez.  It came up when I was in the studio and will continue to come up until the finale when Kirk holds a live viewing of his appearance in the series.

I have avoided watching this series for a few reasons, but mostly because I have mixed emotions about it.  Popular opinion is that Aaron was a bad guy.  Dude killed multiple people and in the end that makes you the baddest of the bad.  But, I live very close to where Aaron grew up and was a few years ahead of him in high school.  I started working in the school district that Aaron went to around the same time he graduated.  In the years of working there I have befriended many people that taught Aaron, along with people that grew up with him and called him a friend.  When you ask those people if Aaron was bad you usually get the same answer: NO!

The version of Aaron they know is different.  It’s one of a super talented kid, with a likable personality, but a piss poor work ethic.  Some have told me that if you took DJ’s (Aaron’s older brother) attitude and put it in Aaron’s body you’d have the perfect football player.  The point is they liked, and in some cases still do like Aaron.  They cheered for him, bragged about him, and had immense pride for the hometown kid while dawning the #81.  Just like they do with Donavan Clingon who got drafted number 7 to the Portland Trail Blazers this past NBA Draft.

All of us were once innocent little babies, so I assume Aaron started out good; I tend to believe that about most people (call me naive). There’s no doubt that he ended up bad, but life is not linear.  I believe in curves and waves, our lives have peaks and valleys: we just ride the waves.  Sometimes the wave shifts and the lows plunge to new depths. Like being diagnosed with cancer 2 out of 3 years, or being born a half-man like Ted Sellers.  But then the wave builds back up, and next thing you know you're being carried up a flight of stairs by Justin Trudel, or having over 3,000 people read your first ever blog after being discussed on the Unnamed Show (Thank You BTW).

Long way of saying, Aaron started good like the rest of us and then began riding his wave that was full of good and bad moments, successes and failures, victories and murders.  Aaron’s wave ended on a low; but who knows, maybe if he chose to live he would have rehabbed himself, got on twitter and won us all back just like OJ did.

Moral of the story, when the lows are low try not to be so hard on yourself (or smoke PCP and shoot people) and when the highs are high ride the shit out of it in style because tides change (with the moon I’m told).

The good news is: the tide washed up this piece of shit show, that I hear is pretty funny.
